Favorite Albums of 2010

11. High Violet by The National
New band to me in 2010. I started by buying The Boxer early in the year and loved their sound. Really enjoy listening to Matt Berninger's voice. Not sure what it is but it's soothing. Favorite tracks are Terrible Love, Bloodbuzz Ohio, and Sorrow. Check out this great video of Bloodbuzz Ohio.
10. God Willin' and The Creek Don't Rise by Ray LaMontagne
Really fell in love with Ray's voice this year. I just listened to this record again and I could play it all day long. Favorite tracks are Repo Man, New York City's Killing Me, For The Summer, and Beg Steal or Borrow.
9. The Shelter by Jars of Clay
Loved Jars of Clay since they first came out. I haven't loved everything they've put out but this is such an awesome record with fantastic artists such as Thad Cockrell, Derek Webb, Amy Grant, David Crowder, Gungor, Sara Groves, Matt Maher, Leigh Nash, Audrey Assad, Brandon Heath, Mac Powell, tobyMac, and more. Sounds like a winning line-up to me. Favorite tracks are the title track, Small Rebellions, Lay it Down, Call My Name and Out of My Hands. All tracks are strong and beautifully crafted, as is their signature.
8. Gorilla Manor by Local Natives
Speaking of brand new records (at least to me), this one made the list and I've only had it for about a month. It's been constantly in my rotation though. Such a great sound. Really, the reason I bought the album was because of the reviews which said they sounded a little like Fleet Foxes, Arcade Fire, and Vampire Weekend. How could you go wrong with that list of bands. Favorite tracks are Wide Eyes, Airplanes, Sun Hands, and Cubism Dream.
7. I and Love and You by The Avett Brothers
Probably my favorite group of the year. Another new group, honestly, over the last year or so. I love the simplicity, rawness, harmonies, and songwriting style. Favorite tracks are the title track, Kick Drum Heart, January Wedding, Laundry Room, And It Spread and lastly Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise.
6. Counting Stars by Andrew Peterson
Been listening to AP for over a decade and I don't have any reason to stop now. And this, in my estimation is not even his best record. Quality music from a great songwriter. Favorite tracks include Many Roads, Dancing in the Minefields, World Traveler, and Isle of Skye.
5. Up on the Ridge by Dierks Bentley
One of my wife and my's favorite country artist and such an excellent mix of country and bluegrass on this record. Favorite tracks would be the title track, Fallin' For You, Rovin' Gambler (just for the pickin' and grinin'), and Bad Angel. It's just a real fun record to listen to.
4. The Suburbs by Arcade Fire
Superb. There's nothing I can say that hasn't been said. All I can say though is if you don't have this album you have to go buy it now. Favorite tracks are #1-6 and then Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains).
3. Born Again by Newsboys
My brother had to actually encourage me (several times) to buy this album. I don't know why I waited. Incredible album. Many outstanding tracks here: Born Again, One Shot, Impossible, Escape and a great version of Mighty to Save.
2. Sigh No More by Mumford and Sons
Their live show is something to behold, so they say. Wish I knew firsthand. If any new band is bigger I don't know about them. I love every single song on this album excluding Little Lion Man (because of language). Two great videos for The Cave and Roll Away Your Stone (Live).
1. Awakening by Passion
Perfect. Chris Tomlin. Kristian Stanfill. David Crowder. Christy Nockels. Charlie Hall. Matt Redman. Fee. Incredible. My whole family loves this album and for weeks this year we listened to it every Sunday on the way to church services. Favorites are Our God, How He Loves, Awakening, Rise and Sing, and Where The Spirit of The Lord Is.

Honorable Mention: Transference by Spoon, The Medicine by John Mark McMillan, Brothers by The Black Keys, Contra by Vampire Weekend, and Raising up the Dead by Caedmon's Call
