As my wife and I have said to each other over the past week, this was the best spring break ever...except those three years we went to Mexico with Matt and Sara Sills to build houses with Casas por Cristo (with Pete). We've just had a great time and I think it's because we didn't plan on doing much but working and getting caught up after a long wrestling season. (Side note = I get pretty singularly focused during the season and not much else matters to me so afterwards there are a lot of messes to clean up and work to get done that I put off until at least mid-March). We were planning on sending our girls away to Nana's house and then it was work camp for Erin and I (Grady would be with us but we could make him happy real easy...it's great when they don't talk :-) So our plans were garage, attic, taxes, finances, garden, yard work, guest room, girl's room, and living room.
So what made it so great? A call about 2 or 3 days before our break started from Amy (Erin's sister) asking if we would please go to North GA with her and her fiancee. Of course, out of sisterly duty we went and had a blast! All 5 of us packed up our gear and stayed at Big Canoe, a resort/retirement village about an hour from our home. We stayed in a cool rental/timeshare 'cabin' which was more like a condo/house. We went on lots of adventures as a family and made some good memories. And to think what spring break could have been like. I thought our chaperoning skills were awesome by the way.
My favorite parts of our mini-vacation to Big Canoe were hiking with the family (and Amy & Adam), canoeing by myself (quite a sight especially when the wooden paddle from my childhood I had in the canoe with me cracked) and with Macy and Amy, Amicalola Falls SP and adventuring on the Amicalola River (seperate trip to the river). It was only 4 nights but it was a great get-away. I hope to do more of this type of thing this summer with our family (probably more of the camping variety or running up for a day).
So, I'm in NC right now (with our whole family) picking up our girls from Nana and Paps house and heading back tomorrow after lunch and then back to school on Monday morning for the last stretch of the school year (where most of my students will already be on summer vacation - at least in their minds). We did get some work done by the way, it wasn't all fun and games (most notably our taxes). The garden is ready for planting (well almost ready), the mailbox area is ready for a facelift, the pine straw is down, the weeds are sprayed, the lawn is cut, the girls room looks great with additional lamps (great trip to IKEA on Thursday), shelves with pictures, the guest room has some art on the wall finally. There is a huge list of things we didn't get done but all-in-all we had a great SB.
BEST EVER!!!
